Dental hygiene awareness month

October is Dental Hygiene Awareness Month                          [Bulletin date: October 18, 2026]

The theme to dental hygiene awareness is “Brush. Floss. Rinse. Chew. Keep it clean. Keep it healthy!”

Fresh breath, strong teeth, and healthy gums are essential for oral health.  Therefore, it is recommended, on a daily basis to brush twice, floss once, and rinse with mouthwash.  Chewing sugar-free gum after meals can also help to remove any fragments of food left behind when brushing is not an option.  These are known as the “daily four” of oral hygiene.

Our oral health is also important to our overall health.  Tooth decay and gum disease can lead to more serious health issues.  Since the mouth is full of blood vessels, bacteria from the oral infections can easily travel to other parts of the body such as the heart and joints which have been replaced, resulting in serious complications and possible hospitalization.  This is why certain patients are prescribed preventative antibiotics prior to any type of dental procedure, including routine cleaning.

Other tips for good oral health include using an oral irrigator if you have difficulty flossing, avoid smoking, reduce sugar intake, visit your dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups, and let your dental team know of any changes in your medical health or medications.

Good oral hygiene keeps everyone smiling!
