Prayer can heal the mind, body and spirit

Prayer can heal the mind, body and spirit

Prayer can be the reciting of learned prayers like the Hail Mary, praying in response to intercessions, long conversations with God, quiet time in Adoration, or simple, short “arrow prayers” we send to heaven throughout the day for various reasons. There is no doubt that prayer is powerful in more ways than one.

When we unburden our hearts to God, we are trusting that He is listening; that He is our friend; that He is the one in control, not us.  When we are sad or angry and others may not fully understand why, God does. Prayer brings us a greater sense of connection which helps reduce feelings of isolation, anxiety, depression, and fear. This brings us peace of mind.

Prayer also helps us feel relaxed allowing our happy hormones (dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin) to be released.  When we feel more tranquil, our stress levels are lessened and our blood pressure and heart rate lowers.  In addition, a study by the American Heart Association found that those who prayed were less likely to smoke and more likely to eat a healthier diet.  All of this is good for our physical health.

And of course, having a prayerful relationship with God deepens our spiritual life, giving us a more positive outlook and stronger sense of purpose.  It brings us hope.

No matter how, when or where we do it, prayer helps heal us in mind, body and spirit.
