A simple truth - flu shots save lives!

The flu shot is different each year because the influenza viruses which cause the flu mutate from season to season, Therefore, to prepare for the upcoming flu season in the northern hemisphere of the globe, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) monitors the southern hemisphere to determine what viruses are predominant there.  From that information the newest up-to-date flu shots are created.

The CDC has stated, “Each year the seasonal flu places a significant burden on the health of people in the United States.”  The upcoming flu season is expected to be no different. This is because every year, millions of people become ill and tens of thousands of people die from the flu (influenza), or related issues such as pneumonia. Sadly, many of the illnesses and deaths may have been prevented if the patient or those around them had received a flu shot.

Therefore, everyone 6 months and older should receive a flu shot each year. By doing so, we create a “herd immunity” - immunity for ourselves, our families, and anyone with whom we come in contact. In addition, our Catholic faith calls us to prevent the spread of disease which may cause harm to others, especially those who are most vulnerable such as our youngest and elderly.

So, please be sure to get your flu shot this year and help save a life. It might just be you or someone you love.
