Understanding help at home due to illness or hospitalization

Assistance at home may be needed during an illness or upon discharge from the hospital. Understanding the types of assistance that are available will assist you in finding the help you need.

Sometimes after hospitalization, you may need physical and/or occupational therapy, or skilled nursing care such as wound care, in your home. This is called “home health services.”  Your physician will write an order for professionally trained medical personnel to visit your home. These may include therapists, a registered nurse, and a certified nursing assistant to help with tasks such as showering. Most medical insurance, including Medicare, will pay for this because it was ordered by your physician.

At times there may be a need for regular, ongoing assistance in the home to help with daily activities such as bathing, medication administration, dressing, cooking, light housework, or transportation to the store or appointments. This type of care is called “home care” and is often not covered by basic medical insurances such as Medicare. However, some secondary insurances and long-term care insurances may cover home care services.

The goal of both types of care is to keep a person safe at home as they recover from an illness or adapt to new limitations on what they can do. Utilizing such care will help lower the risks of problems, prevent readmissions to the hospital, and help improve recovery at home more quickly.

The Pastoral Care office keeps a list of recommended home care options. If you or someone you know may benefit from such help, please contact Linda Walsh at extension 6019.
