February 4th is World Cancer Day [Bulletin date: February 2, 2025]
The theme this year for World Cancer Day is “United by Unique.” It is an initiative to remind us that every person with cancer is unique. We all must unite with this in mind to see them more as a whole person than just a patient with a disease.
A cancer diagnosis is a deeply personal matter that affects the entire person – mind, body and spirit. It affects their relationships, their work/school, their mindset, their future, even their faith. Behind each diagnosis is a human being with a lifetime of stories of the past, present, and future. We need to recognize each story of grief, pain, fear, healing, resilience, love, and success.
Over the last several decades, medical science has made incredible strides in treating cancer. But all too often we have forgotten to treat the person. This year’s World Cancer Day theme reminds us that it is just as important to look at each person’s unique needs while we treat the disease. We should use compassion and empathy alongside medical treatments to help lead each person with cancer to their best, healthiest outcome. It is important to explore different dimensions of people-centered cancer care and new ways of making a difference.
This weekend, the Health and Wellness Ministry will be in the narthex for World Cancer Day. Stop by to support cancer awareness by choosing a ribbon to wear in honor or memory of a loved one and pick up cancer awareness information while you are there.
