Multitasking Driving Truths [Bulletin date: May 25, 2025]
According to the National Safety Council, thousands of people are killed and hundreds of thousands more are seriously injured in distracted driving crashes each year. Meanwhile, every day we continue to see someone attempt to drive while doing something else. Here are some truths from the National Safety Council about the risk of multitasking and driving:
1) Because the
brain is unable to fully focus on two activities at the same time, only partial
attention is given to driving when multitasking.
2) Talking on a
cell phone is riskier than talking to a person in the car because a passenger
can alert the driver to traffic issues while the person on the phone cannot.
3) Using hands-free
and voice-to-text is still NOT a solution because they require the driver to take
their mind and eyes off the road. Statistics show that drivers using their
phones in this way miss 50% of what is going on around them because they are
mentally, if not physically, distracted.
4) Texting at a stop light is a distraction too. Even at a traffic light, drivers are distracted for at least 27 seconds after sending a message.

Don’t get
caught up in thinking there are ways to safely multitask while driving. Make driving your priority and use the phone
once you arrive safely at your destination.
