Skin and Overall Health

Your skin may be a reflection of your overall health          [Bulletin date: May 11, 2025]

The health of your skin may sometimes be an indicator of your overall health.  Underlying health issues may initially show up as a skin issue before other symptoms become obvious.  For example, a rash on the face could indicate conditions such as rosacea, contact dermatitis, or even more serious, lupus.

Specific rashes may develop in people who have diabetes, hepatitis, or even some cancers.  The location of the rash may also be a clue to a medical condition.  Some internal infections result in rashes on the hands or feet, or specifically on the trunk of the body.

Not all skin conditions are indications of medical concerns and may go away on their own.  However, if you notice a change on your skin, a rash, or a discoloration that was not previously present, follow up with your physician.  You may just catch something early and minimize treatment and worry.
