Father's Day Thoughts

Father’s Day Thoughts                                                 [Bulletin date: June 15, 2025]

It was once written, “the greatest gift I ever received came from God – I call him Dad”.  What a wonderful sentiment to explain why we celebrate Father’s Day.

In 1901, Sonora Smart Dodd suggested the idea of a special day to honor men like her father who raised six children on his own.  Many decades passed but finally in 1966, President Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day and in 1972, it became an official national holiday

Today there are more than 72 million fathers across the U.S. and that does not include the other men in our families who are like fathers to us.  So how may we best celebrate these special men on Father’s Day?  With over 17,923 men’s clothing stores, 12,889 hardware stores and an additional 4,581 home centers across the country, surely we can find the right item to show how much they mean to us.

However, what we really need to tell our fathers, stepfathers, fathers-in-law, grandfathers, godfathers, and special uncles, is how much we appreciate and love them; that their presence in our lives have shaped the people we are or will become.  After all, “a father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow” (author unknown.)

Remembering all the special men in our families, past and present… Happy Father’s Day!
