The connection between your mind and your feet

Focusing on your feet may help your mental health!       [Bulletin date: May 31st, 2026]

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and for the past few weeks, I have shared lots of information about how our mental health is important to our overall well-being.  In this final week of May, I would like to share a great way to help reduce stress. This information came from Meritus Behavioral Health in Hagerstown, Maryland.

When you find yourself needing to release or reduce stress, temporarily take your mind off the situation and focus on your feet.

1)    Place your feet on the ground and look down at them.

2)    In your imagination, choose your favorite colored marker.

3)    With that imaginary marker, draw an outline of your foot starting at the heel and slowing going up the outside of the foot to your little toe.

4)    In your imagination, continue to draw around each toe and then go back down the inside of the foot to your heel.

5)    Can you “see” the colored outline of your foot?

6)    Now, repeat with the other foot!

7)    Imagine your footprints when you are feeling stressed.

Another way to use your feet to reduce stress is to wiggle your toes inside your shoes.  Do this to one foot at a time. Pay attention to the sensation as you wiggle each toe. Tense up the foot and then stretch it out. Then, repeat with the other foot.

Bet you never knew how connected your mind and your feet can be!

Stay well!
