Promoting mental health promotes overall health [Bulletin date: 5/3/26]
Wellness is more than simply the absence of disease. It is the balance between emotional, physical, social, and spiritual well-being. Unfortunately, mental health is sometimes overlooked as a critical component to overall good health.
Each May during Mental Health Awareness Month, we are called to find ways to promote and achieve wellness through good mental health. We can begin by eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, getting adequate sleep and time for relaxation, having a sense of self-worth, having adequate coping skills to help us be resilient, being fully aware of our emotions, and staying connected to family, friends, and community.
Just as we have regular physical check-ups and screenings, we should also have regular evaluations of our mental well-being. This can be done during a regular physical checkup or by online screening tools such as those found at https://screening.mhanational.org/. Screenings should include a series of questions about lifestyle, eating and drinking habits, and mental awareness.
Good mental
health begins with awareness and understanding.
By embracing the concept of good mental health, we can promote healthy
lives for ourselves, our friends, and our loved ones.
