Healthy Aging with Adaptive Equipment [Bulletin date: July 13, 2025]
Adaptive equipment is any device or medical equipment that may help with activities of daily living such as walking, bathing, dressing, eating, driving, etc. These may include a walker, a cane, a reacher or grabber, a sock aid, grab bars, or a bedside commode. They may also include specific devices for vehicles to improve safety when driving.
With age or illness, our balance and movement may be altered due to changes in vision, hearing, or physical conditions such as arthritis. This in turn puts us at risk of falling or isolation because of decreased mobility. It’s important to recognize when these changes develop and embrace the improvement in our lives that adaptive equipment may allow.
Talk to your physician about how such equipment may increase your independence. A referral to a physical or occupational therapist may be all that is needed to dramatically improve your lifestyle. Remember, part of healthy aging is recognizing changes in our bodies and how to adapt to these changes while safely maintaining our dignity.
