Lightning: Knowing the truth might just save your life   [Bulletin date: July 27, 2025]

Some may say lightning is beautiful, but it is also immensely powerful and can be dangerous. Tens of millions of lightning bolts hit the ground every year. While most occur in the summer, they can happen anytime and anywhere.

Each year, people are severely and permanently injured or killed by lightning which also can cause major property damage. Understanding the following facts can help you protect yourself and your family from lightning’s life-threatening power.

1)     Lightning does strike the same place more than once

2)     Lightning can strike up to fifteen miles from a thunderstorm cloud which means it can strike even when the sky is blue overhead.

3)     Lightning can hit any object of any height, so crouching low or sheltering under a tree will not lessen the chance of being struck by lightning.

4)     Most vehicles are safe from a lightning strike because the metal roofs and sides divert lightning around you.  However, the rubber tires have little to do with keeping you safe.

5)     Most importantly, if someone is struck by lightning it is safe to touch them to give them first aid and CPR, if necessary. Just make sure you remain safe when doing so.
