Psoriasis Facts [Bulletin date: August 24, 2025]
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that causes skin cells to grow so quickly that they form thick patches or plaques. This often occurs over the knees, elbows, scalp, hands, feet, or lower back. These areas appear to be white, silvery, or red and can vary in size. In some cases, the condition can even cause swollen and painful joints, a condition known as psoriatic arthritis.
Psoriasis occurs when the immune system overreacts, leading to the inflamed and flaky skin. Because it tends to run in families, there may be a genetic factor. It is important to know that unlike some other skin conditions, it is not contagious. While psoriasis can be treated, it is sometimes difficult to control due to triggers such as stress, injury, overexposure to sunlight, certain medications, alcohol use, and smoking.
Living with
psoriasis does not need to control relationships and your life. It can be
easily diagnosed and if treated, can be kept under control. Be sure to speak
with a dermatologist to receive the best treatment possible. For more
