Fun Flu Facts

Fun Flu Facts                                                                [Bulletin date: September 14, 2025]

Here are some key facts about the flu and why you should get a flu shot this year:

·        The flu is a highly contagious disease which can threaten the lives of children under four, adults over fifty, pregnant women, and anyone with a compromised immune system or a chronic health condition.

·        The flu is transmitted by inhaling infected droplets in the air (sneeze, cough) but the virus can also live on surfaces such as doorknobs, handles, television remotes, computer keyboards, and telephones.

·        The flu virus strains mutate each year making annual immunizations a necessity; the shot is most effective when received in the early fall.

·        The flu shot is NOT a live virus and therefore cannot give you the flu. Side effects may include aches, low-grade fever, or runny nose, but these are not the flu.

·        The flu shot is manufactured using chicken embryos NOT human embryos.

·        The flu shot is recognized within our Catholic faith as a way to prevent epidemics that may threaten the lives of the most vulnerable.

·        When everyone (the “herd”) gets immunized, the spread of the flu is minimized.

·        A minimum of two weeks is needed to build up immunity against the flu after receiving the shot.

·        The St. Ann flu shot clinics will be available starting next weekend. See bulletin for more details.

REMEMBER: Flu shots save lives – be sure to immunize!
