October is Talk to Your Pharmacist Month [Bulletin date: October 5, 2025]
Pharmacists are an important part of your health care team. They are experts on prescription and over-the-counter medications. They know what medication may interact with another, or react with food, or how a medication may affect another medical condition. That is just one reason why it is important to share your medical history with your pharmacist.
For maximum
efficiency and safety, try to purchase all medication from the same pharmacy. But,
if you need to use different pharmacies, make sure each one knows about all the
medications you take. That way each pharmacist can be sure your medications
work to their full potential.
It is also important to talk to your pharmacist about brand verses generic medications. There may be a slight difference in them due to different manufacturers. At times, this can affect how the medication works for you. Discuss with the pharmacist regarding the reason for each medication, any side effects that may occur, what to do if you miss a dose, or when is the best time of the day to take a medication, especially if you take multiple medications.
Stop by and meet your pharmacist this month. Consider asking for regularly scheduled reviews of all your medications – perhaps every three months or whenever a new medication is prescribed.
