Taking care of your lungs

Taking care of your lungs and your health                 [Bulletin date: November 30, 2025]

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, COPD Awareness Month, and Great American Smoke Out Month. These awareness initiatives are important because good lung health is essential to overall health. The function of our lungs affects other body organs such as the heart, kidneys, bladder, colon, and even the skin. This is because poor lung function deprives the body of the oxygen needed to repair and regenerate healthy tissue.

One of the most important lung health issues is lung cancer. It is the leading cause of death in the U.S., followed by colon and pancreatic cancers. Sadly in 2024, it was responsible for 124,730 deaths of both smokers and non-smokers.

Smoking is a critical issue because smokers, and those around them, are at a much higher risk for lung cancer and other lung conditions such as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), emphysema, severe bronchitis, and asthma.  This is because the level of air pollutant particles in households with smokers is ten times higher than that of a non-smoker’s house. This in turn increases other family members’ risks for lung issues, especially lung cancer caused by secondhand smoke.

Take time this month to think about your lung health. Seek medical advice about your risk for lung cancer or other lung conditions. And if you smoke, please try to stop! If you do so now, you will have healthier lungs with which to sing by Christmas!
