Thankfulness comes from within [Bulletin date: November 23, 2025]
Have you ever been speechless when asked, “What are you thankful for this year?” It is a hard question when we are troubled by everyday events, poor health, or relationship issues. To answer the question, we need to realize that true thankfulness comes from within; from the God-given spirit we all have. One could have no material goods or be in extremely poor health and still be thankful. It is completely a state of mind and spirit.
People with a sense of thankfulness are those who can recognize the beauty in their lives. This is something we can all embrace. Start with putting aside anger, frustration, and worry. Do not hold on to grudges and negative feelings. Live in the moment; do not dwell on the past or the future that has yet to come. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That is why we call it the present.”
Be aware of your senses. Appreciate shapes, colors, details, literally “smell the flowers,” savor each bite of food, appreciate touch, listen to music, the wind, leaves, and simple quiet. Cherish moments of lightheartedness like laughter, affection, and playfulness which are all too infrequent in our lives. Take a break, get some down time, just relax. It may help you appreciate your life even more.
Finally, smile
and be thankful no matter what. Those around you may become more thankful by
your example because true thankfulness can be contagious!
