Santa
says, “Choose safe and healthy toys for Christmas”
[Bulletin date: December 7, 2025]
It’s that time again when Santa’s elves are busy making toys for all the tots in the world. If you are helping Santa this year, please keep several thoughts in mind when choosing that special gift.
First, make sure the toy is appropriate for the recipient’s age and matches the child’s developmental skills and abilities. Don’t buy a toy based on the child’s physical size. Be sure to read the age-appropriate range on the item.
Second, for infants, toddlers or any child who still puts objects in their mouths, do not give a toy with pieces small enough to fit through the hole of a toilet paper roll. Such small pieces are a serious choking hazard.
Third, if the toy requires batteries, be sure that the battery compartment cannot be opened by young fingers. Be especially careful with button-style batteries. All batteries are a serious choking hazard and are a life-threatening medical emergency if swallowed!
Fourth, if the gift is sports related be sure to include all additional safety equipment such as helmets, cushioned pads, goggles, etc.
Finally, look for “ASTM F963” on every item to know that the product meets the national safety standards for toys as set by the American Society for Testing and Materials. And make sure all electric toys are "UL Approved." Check the label to be sure.
