Remembering a deceased loved one during the holidays

Remembering a Deceased Loved One During the Holidays    [Bulletin date: December 14, 2025]

Grief is especially difficult during the Christmas holidays. A familiar song or smell may trigger a moment of sadness or loneliness as it acutely reminds us of our deceased loved one. While some traditions may change when the loved one is no longer with us, continuing family traditions previously shared with that person may bring back wonderful, albeit bittersweet memories.

This new and different time for our families may also be one that helps us grow and make new traditions to honor our deceased loved ones. This keeps the loved one as part of our family’s holiday celebrations. Perhaps we could donate to a special cause in their name, give an ornament symbolic of them to family and friends, set a place at the table in their honor, or simply share stories about them from past holidays. Traditions, whether old or new, bring a feeling of hope, healing, and renewal through our grief.

The Pastoral Care office has several resources that may help someone cope with the holidays after the loss of a loved one. Feel free to contact us for more information.
