Taking precautions to stay healthy over the holidays

Taking precautions to stay healthy over the holidays         [Bulletin date: December 21, 2025]

“Tis the season of Christmas. Unfortunately, it is also the season for the flu and other contagious diseases such as COVID, RSV, and pneumonia. Knowing ways to prevent them will lessen the spread of disease in our community and help everyone stay healthy over the holidays

First and foremost, everyone should stay up-to-date with their immunizations. This significantly reduces the chance of infecting others. When someone is not immunized against a disease such as the flu or COVID, they can unknowingly put others at risk before they even know they are ill.

In addition, good hygiene practices such as washing hands for at least twenty seconds will help prevent the spread of contagious diseases. When handwashing is not possible, the use of hand sanitizers containing at least 70% alcohol is an excellent idea. This is a convenient substitute in restaurants after handling menus that are seldom if ever sanitized.

Other preventative measures are: avoid sharing drinks or eating utensils, avoid sharing pillows or blankets, and keep hands away from the eyes, nose, and mouth. In addition, routinely disinfecting surfaces will help. Don’t forget door knobs, telephones, faucet handles, countertops, keyboards, and any other surfaces or objects shared by others.

And remember, the best preventative measure to avoid making others sick is to stay home when you are!

Have a happy, healthy holiday!
