Finding help and hope for mental illness

Finding Help and Hope for Mental Illness               [Bulletin date: May 17, 2026]

Unfortunately, mental illness is often viewed as something that can be overcome by “just trying harder.”  This is not true.  As with physical illnesses, mental illnesses also require professional treatment, education, and support to achieve recovery.

Our faith teaches that we are each made in God’s image and that we are called to love and care for one another.  This includes showing love, compassion, and respect for individuals and their families who struggle with mental health issues.  We need to let go of any stigma that might be associated with mental illness, especially since 46 percent of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition sometime in their lives.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by mental illness.  NAMI Cobb is our local resource for those in need.  If you, a loved one, or a family you know is struggling with mental illness, please go to www.namicobb.org to learn more.

In addition, consider taking a Mental Health First Aid class.  Just as CPR and first aid classes address physical health emergencies, this class educates on a variety of mental health issues and offers tools to help those in need.  You may find a class near you by going to https://mentalhealthfirstaid.org/individuals/find-courses/. You never know who you may be able to help one day.
