Steps to good mental health

Steps to good mental health                      [Bulletin date: May 10, 2026]

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2025, more than 1 billion people are living with mental health disorders worldwide. Sadly, these conditions are prevalent in all countries and communities, affecting all socioeconomic groups. They represent the second biggest reason for long-term disability, loss of healthy life, and economic instability.  Thankfully, there are several things you can do to prevent becoming part of these statistics.

Start with your physical health by doing activities you enjoy and focusing on the world around you.  Exercise not only keeps your body healthy by reducing stress on organs and blood vessels, it also increases endorphins, the hormones that make you happy.  Similarly, when you participate in things you like to do and focus on something other than yourself, you reduce stress and increase your own happiness.  All of these result in a heathier mental status.

Also, steer away from harmful substances.  Addiction to drugs and alcohol may lead to or accentuate mental health issues.

Finally, talk to someone you trust such as a friend or relative and seek professional help when needed.  The website www.FindTreatment.gov is an anonymous and confidential resource for finding licensed mental health professionals in your area.  There are also organizations where you may find help especially when the need is more urgent.  These include calling the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) at 800-950-6264, or calling/texting 988, the new 24/7, free and confidential mental health hotline.
