Laughter really is good for you!

Humor and laughter can improve your overall health              [Bulletin date: August 30, 2026]

Have you heard the saying, “laughter is the best medicine?”  That’s because adding humor and laughter to your daily routine benefits both your mental and physical health.

Studies have shown that laughter triggers the release of feel-good hormones (endorphins) and in turn, reduces the stress hormone cortisol which can cause damage to both your body and mind.  Lowering the amount of stress hormone reduces your risk for blood clots, heart issues, and a variety of stress related conditions affecting digestion, immunity, sleep, and relaxation.

Humor and laughter are good for your mental health by reducing anxiety and shifting negative emotions and perspectives to more positive ones. In addition, laughing with others is a great way to keep relationships fresh.  It also helps reduce burnout on the job.

Here are some ways to add humor and laughter to your daily life:

1)    Journal three things that happen to you each day

2)    Watch a funny movie or show

3)    Watch standup comedy

4)    Share a joke with a friend

5)    Have a game night with friends or family

6)    Try laughter yoga

7)    Read a funny book

8)    Spend time with a pet or child and watch their antics

9)    Add funny things to your environment – a sign, a funny page-a-day calendar, a mug, or a funny picture

Remember, your health depends on a little humor and laughter each day!
