Medication & Supplement Interactions

Medications + Supplements = Drug Interactions?               [Bulletin date: August 9, 2026]

All medications, including supplements, are made of chemicals. Sometimes the combination of these may cause one or more to work differently. They may become too strong, too weak, or simply change in their chemical makeup. This may lead to serious drug interactions.

To help prevent this, follow these safety tips from the FDA:

  1. Communicate with all of your physicians about your medications and never take anything they do not know about.
  2. Read information on the labels; use medications only as instructed.
  3. Keep and update a written medication list that includes brand and generic names of prescription and non-prescription medications, the dosages and frequency of use for each, and who prescribed it and why.
  4. Routinely go over your medication list with all of your physicians and pharmacists to let them know if something has changed, if a medication is no longer helping, or if you cannot afford a medication, so that necessary changes can be made.
  5. Finally, if you need to use more than one pharmacy to obtain the best pricing, it is essential to inform each pharmacy of ALL your medications. A pharmacist is a great resource to help find potential drug interactions, so be sure to consult one if ever you have questions.
