Please don’t ignore immunizations

Please don’t ignore immunizations

Immunizations are not just for babies and children: Adults need them too. They not only save the lives of recipients, but also those around them with compromised immune systems such as infants, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions.

If immunizations were to stop, diseases that are almost unknown today would stage a devastating comeback, causing serious illness and deaths. Society’s “herd immunity” would be diminished, allowing once preventable diseases to be passed easily from one person to another. Diseases such as smallpox have been totally eliminated with worldwide immunizations, and it’s hoped that one day, this may also be true for polio and meningitis.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a schedule for childhood, youth and adult immunizations. There are at least fourteen immunizations recommended for children as well as several adult immunizations, such as routine tetanus boosters, influenza (the flu), and shingles. Talk to your pediatrician or primary care physician about keeping up with your immunization schedule. You will not only be helping yourself, but those you love and our future generations.
