Winter has arrived and it is time to time to think about preparing both your home and vehicle before a storm hits.
First, be sure to have cell phone chargers for both locations. In addition, a backup battery pack can charge your phone and similar devices during a power loss. A hand-crank radio or a portable one with extra batteries is also important.
Second, make an emergency kit for your car which contains a phone charger, shovel, flashlight, batteries, blankets, water, snack food, rope/chains, windshield scraper, booster cables, road salt/sand, canned flat fix product for tire repair, first aid kit, emergency flares, “HELP” signs/flags, maps, compass, paper towels, and waterproof matches.
Some other considerations when preparing for a winter storm:
· Establish a family communication plan in case you are not together when the storm hits.
· Have blankets, sleeping bags, and coats ready.
· Make sure your fireplace is ready for use in case of a power outage.
· Have bottled water and food that does not require refrigeration available (and a handheld can opener).
· Stay up to date on prescription refills.
· Have extra pet food on hand.
