Don’t take your heart for granted

Don’t take your

heart for granted

The heart is the hardest-working muscle in your body. Within the first 24 days after conception, it begins to beat and is expected to continue for many decades without ever taking a break. While the heart works silently every moment of our lives, we sometimes forget about it and do things that may cause it to fail.

While it is best to start at an early age to keep the heart healthy, it is never too late to make changes in your lifestyle to improve your heart health. Some changes may be easier than others, such as getting regular exercise or choosing a healthy diet with less fat, cholesterol, and sugar. Some changes may be more difficult, such as quitting smoking or losing weight. Controlling diabetes is also important, because it puts stress on the heart and blood vessels throughout the body. If left untreated, this may lead to a heart attack, heart failure, or stroke.

February is Heart Health Month, a time to become more aware of how to keep your heart healthy and happy. Choosing just one of the ideas above and making positive changes to your lifestyle will make a substantial difference. Your heart works hard for you throughout your lifetime! Do what you can to keep it healthy.
