Celebrating National Family Caregiver’s Day

Celebrating National Family Caregiver’s Day

At one time or another, most of us are called upon to be a caregiver. But how do you do this while caring for yourself and getting the support you need? Here are ten tips from the Caregiver Action Network that may help lessen the stress of being a family caregiver.

 1)   Seek support from other caregivers. Consider joining an online or in-person caregiver support group.

2)   Take care of your own health so you are strong enough to care for your loved one.

3)   Accept offers of help from others – suggest specific things others may do for you.

4)   Learn how to communicate effectively with doctors. Keep notes in preparation for doctor visits.

5)   Take much needed respite breaks and do so often.

6)   Watch for signs of depression in yourself and seek help if needed.

7)   Be open to innovative technologies that may help you care for your loved one.

8)   Organize medical information and update as things change.

9)    Make sure your legal documents are in order.

10) Give yourself credit for doing the best you can in one of the toughest jobs there is!
