Courtesy is being polite and respectful in our actions and expressions towards others. It can be as simple as saying words such as “please” and “thank you.” However, it can go beyond that to include how we speak about and treat each other. Kindness and courtesy speak volumes about our character and morals. When noticed by others, it is easily emulated. This is especially true for our children.

So, the next time someone needs a door opened, help carrying something, needs a seat in a crowded room, or is new to work, school or to the neighborhood, take the time to be courteous and kind. By reaching out to help, you are telling the person they are important, and you care about them. And, if you are the recipient of such kindness, remember to acknowledge the courtesy with a “thank you.”
March 21 is National Common Courtesy Day, a day to remember the importance of courtesy. The rest of the year is the time to make it a habit!
