Start something healthy for Lent

 March 3, 2024

It is thought that if you do something for more than 21 days, it can become a habit. Why not use the season of Lent to start some healthy habits?

Our choice of foods and activities directly affect our physical, mental, and spiritual health. This year, instead of giving up something, try taking up a new behavior that can become a healthy habit all year long. Here are some ideas anyone can do:

1)   Eat meals that are low in fat and calories and full of whole grains, fresh vegetables, and fruits.

2)   Make an effort each day to put down the phone or walk away from the computer and spend time with family, friends, and God through prayer or meditation.

3)   Set an alarm to go to bed on time. Or get up 30 minutes early each day and exercise or read the Bible or another spiritual inspiration.

4)   Make a family promise to drop the “I want …” phrase from conversation and instead, say “I will …” Be intentional in your thinking.

5)   Instead of spending money on an item you don’t need, consider taking the funds you would have spent and using them to donate to a worthy cause.

Many of us give up foods or activities during Lent, only to be relieved on Easter Sunday that we can enjoy it again (example: chocolate). By doing something new and healthy during Lent, the new behavior will become a habit – one that can last beyond the chocolate on Easter. Just think how routine this new, healthy habit may become by Advent!
