An Insight on Cataracts
Cataracts, the clouding of the eye’s lenses, are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40. While cataracts start out small with very little effect on vision, over time changes occur such as blurred or glaring vision, halo images around lights, a sense of a film over the eyes, or the feeling of looking through a cloudy piece of glass.
Some risk factors may contribute to the formation of cataracts. These include UV light exposure, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, smoking, usage of statin cholesterol medications or extended useof steroids, and family history.
There is some discussion that nutrition may have some effect in preventing cataracts. Nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids may reduce cataract risk. Also, wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UV sun rays will help to reduce your risk.
As symptoms evolve, glasses or other visual aids may be helpful. If vision continues to worsen and begins to affect daily activities, then surgery may be necessary. Cataract surgery is fairly simple, relatively painless and quite successful in restoring vision. Always be sure to contact an eye specialist if there is any change in vision.
