March is Caffeine Awareness Month [Bulletin date: March 30, 2025]
There are a lot of pros and cons surrounding the consumption of caffeine. The goal of caffeine awareness month is to help us learn more about the use of caffeine in our diets. Here are some interesting facts:
- Is it only in coffee? Caffeine can be found in soda, tea, chocolate or cocoa, energy drinks and in some over-the-counter medications.
- Is it addictive? It is not addictive like some drugs, but is hard for some people to stop due to withdrawal symptoms such as sleepiness, headache, irritability, constipation, and anxiety. Cutting back on caffeine intake should be done gradually by consuming smaller portions each day.
- Does it cause insomnia? This depends on what time of day it is consumed. Be sure to limit intake to recommended amounts and avoid consuming caffeine late in the day.
- Does it increase the risk of medical conditions? Excessive use of caffeine may contribute to anxiety and nervousness, sleep issues, heart issues, gastrointestinal issues, urinary problems, osteoporosis, and may interact with some medications making them either more potent or ineffective.
- Are there benefits to consuming caffeine? Studies have shown that consuming caffeine may actually help prevent some diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, colon and liver cancer, gallstones as well as reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
