Do not wait – Hydrate! [Bulletin date: June 8, 2025]
The human body is made of approximately 60% water. Adequate fluid intake is essential to remove body waste, control temperature, regulate the heart rate, maintain proper blood pressure, and assure other metabolic functions occur correctly.
Too little water
(dehydration) or too much water (overhydration) can have dramatic, sometimes
life-threatening effects. This is because the concentration of blood and
electrolytes varies with the amount of fluid in the body.
Keeping
ourselves hydrated is a challenge, especially during the summer. Here are a few
tips:
- Try to drink at least six eight-ounce cups of water per day.
- Drink fluids throughout the day – always have a bottle of water with you and keep on a schedule (for example, with meals or on the hour)
- Eat water-rich foods like salads, vegetables, and fruits.
- Check urine output and color – colorless or light-yellow means adequate hydration; darker yellow means possible dehydration.
- Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages in extreme heat – these may actually increase fluid loss.
- Add sugar-free flavoring to your water such as a slice of lemon or lime.
- Be proactive and drink fluids before you exercise or work outside and before you feel thirsty!
Water is the basis of life so be sure to always keep your body hydrated for maximum wellness! For more information go to www.WebMd.com and search for “hydration.”
