Health Screenings

The Screening Conversation                               [Bulletin date: September 7, 2025]

We often hear discussions about whether to have certain health screenings. Some of this is due to research statistics and sometimes it is driven by the health insurance industry. Either way, it is important that you have a conversation with a physician about what is right for YOU.

At the minimum, you should have at least an annual check-up with a primary care physician. At that appointment, you and your physician should discuss a schedule for any necessary routine screening examinations. These could include basic bloodwork such as blood counts, liver and kidney studies, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels.  They may also include specific bloodwork right for you, such as A1C for diabetes or PSA for prostate health. And do not forget other screenings such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and EKGs or other heart tests, depending on your age.

Communication with your physician is key to getting the right screenings done for you at the right time. Routine screenings may prevent, slow down, or even catch a life-threatening condition before it progresses. So, make an appointment with your physician soon.  If you do not have one, go to www.healthgrades.com to find a physician who is right for you.
