The facts about childhood
obesity [Bulletin date: September
27, 2026]
Over the last several decades childhood obesity has become an epidemic with one in five children and adolescents affected. It puts our children at early risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, all leading to possible heart disease and stroke at a young age. Obesity can also cause joint and bone pain especially in the hips and knees, and breathing issues such as asthma and sleep apnea. And, sadly it is linked to emotional and social issues such as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, bullying, and suicide.
While there is a link to family history and genetics for obesity, there are other risks that can be controlled with lifestyle changes. Those risks include consuming food and drinks high in calories and low in nutrients, spending too much time looking at screens and not enough hours moving or playing every day, and sleeping poorly or not getting enough sleep.
All children deserve a healthy start in life. It’s our responsibility to make that possible. As parents, healthcare providers, educators, businesses, and other organizations, we should encourage programs and activities that prevent childhood obesity. We should also set good examples regarding healthy food choices, physical activities, and daily exercise. If we all take a stand against childhood obesity, the results can last a lifetime.
