September is National Preparedness Month               [Bulletin date: September 6, 2026] 

“Americans Stand Ready” is the theme for 2026 National Preparedness Month emphasizing the urgency to take steps to prepare your family for the unexpected.  Consider these questions:

  1. What emergencies could occur where you live?  What do you need to do to stay safe?
  2. Do you have supplies to shelter-in-place for several days?
  3. Does your family have a communication plan if members are separated during an emergency?
  4. Do you have escape routes and window ladders in case of a home fire?  Have you practiced with them?
  5. Do you know how to turn off the water and gas to your home in an emergency?
  6. Are your insurance policies up to date to cover floods, tornadoes, fire, etc.?

Recent news stories of storms, floods, and wildfires remind us of the importance of preparing in advance. You can learn more about preparing your family for such emergencies at www.Ready.gov. There you will also find tips on assessing your risks, dealing with power outages, receiving emergency alerts, making a family communication plan, and building an emergency kit.
